Siena is going to have their hands full because Tenn is stronger, taller, and has a lot of depth. They also have not been missing a lot of shots or FT's. However, it could be said that Siena has a few advantages at this stage;

Tenn has been much worse than Siena from 3 this year and Tenn's schedule has been fairly light so far. They haven't really been challenged yet and if Siena puts them on their heels early I think they can rattle them.
Also, I think the size advantage will really only be noticable at SG with Kenny, CJ, Downey all at 6-2 and 6-3 and in the front court when Rossiter is not playing. It won't likely matter for Kenny but it may be tough for CJ and Downey to get good looks.

Matchups:

Pg Ronald Moore (6-0) vs. Bobby Maze (6-2)
SG Kenny Hasbrouck (6-3) vs JP Prince (6-7)
SF Edwin Ubiles (6-6) vs Scotty Hopson (6-7)
PF Alex Franklin (6-5) vs Tyler Smith (6-7)***
C Ryan Rossiter (6-8.5) vs. Wayne Chism (6-9)/Brian Williams (6-10)

If Alex can somewhat neutralize Smith and Kenny can be Kenny then I think we can take them.
What does everyone else think?

Vols are 3-0 so far with wins over Chattanooga and Tennessee Martin at home and at Middle Tenn State.

Time to sneak up on these guys is now. Looking at their schedule leads me to think that they are not going to lose any sleep over us, at least not beforehand.

I hope we don't match up like we did against Arkansas in the NCAA under Paul. Although, I feel this staff will have the kids very well prepared as they have shown they are very capable of doing.

This team Siena is wayyy more athletic than that one. Other than Faison and maybe Arch we had nobody to deal with Arkansas' athletic ability. This team has Moore, Hasbrouck, Ubiles, Franklin, Wignot, Jackson who are all capable of going head-to-head with anybody.

And now we have Mitch helping prepare for these games. he is like having a second head coach. I'm crazy enough to think we sneak one in here! :-)

Saints have to score, if we shoot well we have a chance. Of course we have to defend also - Tennessee has a lot of offensive weapons

It's going to be rough. They're bigger and and more athletic at every position.

Aside from Tyler Smith, who is a bonafide star, there are a lot of very talented pieces and parts. A few transfers and freshmen play prominent roles on this team that is not all that familiar with each other. They may all be more talented than Siena's cast of characters, but this years Siena team shows a great deal of cohesiveness that could put Tennessee's new group of players in a tough spot for the first time year. Trailing. This could be a critical spot for Siena's veteran group to exploit the Vols inexperienced backcourt. I for one, don't count Siena out of this one at all.
Hopson may enter the draft after this year. Hopefully this will be the game that has them searching for their identity and unable to find it.

Best-of-seven or Best-of-five..Siena can't beat Tennessee but in a one game situation Siena can beat Tennessee. We have to jump out early to a lead IMO. If Siena gets down 15-5 it's going to be a long afternoon. The team needs to play from ahead. If we rebound, defend and shoot around 50% we will have a chance late - and that's all you can ask for.

Scotty Hopson - McD's All-American, freshman at UT. Similar size and skill set to Ubiles. Should be a great matchup between those two.

UT is green. They are young and a lot of their guys have not been through the wars yet. Even if they get a lead, they have very, very inexperienced guards.

I expect Siena to come right out and punch them in the mouth, or at least take a pretty big swing - Siena has an experience and a chemistry edge. If Siena is taking down a big this year, this is the best chance.

I dunno soup... out of Tennessee, Kansas and Pitt I agree Tennessee would be the best shot at a win. However Siena will likely face another high-major such as Maryland or Oklahoma State next Sunday even if they don't beat Tennessee. I think Siena has a really good shot to win that game.

The best thing for Siena's chances at an upset is our experienced season star guards (Moore and Hasbrouck) against Tennessee's talented but young guards.

UT's Prince has a bad ankle coming out of the Middle Tenn game. Also, seems UT's biggest problem is defense, according to their forums - with Hopson being one of the main culprits.

Good post. Let's hope our D can get them off balance early. Can't wait for Thursday.

Hello Saints. Just wanted to stop by and welcome you to our board if you care to stop in. We are looking forward to a great weekend of basketball. What a field, huh? G-town, MI State, 'Zaga, etc. No matter what the outcome of our game is, I think you will be our first true test and I think we both could learn early what we need to work on before March (I expect you will be there for the dance). Hopefully, we will make it as well. Hansbrouck, Rossiter, Ubiles, Franklin and Downey are all coming out of the gate strong. It should be interesting to see how we match up against your team. Frankly, the matchup worries me. Our defense could be better at this point.
I won't linger or troll your board. Just wanted to tell you guys that we're looking forward to our game on Thursday. Here's hoping we have a competitive, injury free game.
Cheers!

Thanks, Memphis. You have a great program at Tenn, and we look forward to competing with you this week. It should be a great weekend of hoops down in Florida. Best of luck to you guys this season, other than on Thursday!

How do you feel about your new talent--how do they look on the court so far? As you know, we have the same starting 5 as last year, 2 sophs (Jackson and Rossiter) who will be more prominent, and the freshmen Downey and Wignot who are fitting into our system very nicely so far.

Welcome Mphs, thank you for the kind words about our guys. We are looking forward to the game on Thursday to. It looks like a good matchup as both teams play the same sort of style of play.

Thanks for the welcome, 77. It's been a disappointing past couple of decades for UT hoops, but Pearl has us all very excited about basketball again. It's a good feeling.

I knew you were returning the whole starting group, which gave me reason to circle this one on the schedule early. Hopsont has TONS of upside. D is suspect. Tatum has been with us for two years but has been redshirted due to injuries. He can shoot. Maze is a much improved player over his days at OK. He distributes well, controls the ball and scores. No complaints thus far. Negedu will be a beast in years to come but is still learning. The jury is still out on Woolridge as far as I'm concerned. Not a bad class, though. Each have the potential to light it up. As for our game, I just hate it that the loser moves to ESPNU, which most of us don't get down here. I really want to see the boys play the weekend. With this field, it almost feels like a March preview - and so early in the season!

Thanks for the welcome, Boogie. I expect an action packed game on Thursday. I think it is doubtful that we come out of the tourney unscathed. But it will be a learning experience for all involved and should be a good guage as to what needs work in the coming months.
